Cayuga, Ontario influenza virus warningHealth officals in Hamilton, Ontario have issued a new influenza virus advisory, after 200 severe cases of the virus have been reported.

The virus is transmitted when an infected person sneezes directly into the eyes, nose, or mouth of another person, while it is airborne or through hand to eye transmission.

The virus can be spread the day the symptoms appear, which is usually between 5 and 7 days of getting the virus. Symptoms will start suddenly with extreme fever, cough, fatigue and headache. You can remain contagious for up to a week after symptoms cease. The influenza virus enters the respiratory system, the virus invades your cells and forces them to replicate more virus particles. The virus particles invade other cells.

Health care professionals suggest that to protect yourself from this virus, individuals can get a flu shot to have some immunity against the virus. Washing of hands constantly, try not to touch your mouth, eyes, nose. Practice cough/sneezing hygiene by coughing into a tissue rather than your hands.
